A Patio Has Less Building Restrictions Than A Wood Deck

When building a deck to enhance your outdoor space, the traditional choice is to use wood. However there are certain advantages to using paving stones, or pavers, that you might not have previously considered.

The actual building work will be easier and cheaper with pavers than with wood. Even with the simplest designs you must be prepared to pay for wrong cuts and other mishaps when using wood. Pavers are simpler to use as well as being less expensive.

Building permits and construction regulations tend to be very specific when dealing with wooden decks. Make sure you fully investigate the rules in your area before spending a lot on your deck. If you are reported for violating the rules, not only will you be fined but you will have to take down your construction. These requirements often include size of deck, type of wood and even color. You will need to make sure you are not encroaching on your neighbor’s land or blocking the light to their garden. You also need to be certain that you aren’t blocking utility access points. Decks constructed from pavers are subject to much less stringent building regulations and fit easily into most building codes. They also do not have the same risks of rot in standing water and water infiltration.

Make sure your plants and flowers will be shown to their best advantage with your new deck. Re-landscaping your yard to fit in with the new wooden deck can cost more than the deck itself. Pavers, on the other hand, can be sheared to fit in with your existing yard arrangements.

Make sure your deck has plenty of space. If the deck gives the feeling of being cramped it won’t be used to its full potential. Most people love to barbeque outside in the summer and you want to be sure an outdoor kitchen will sit safely on your deck. This is more achievable with a spacious paved patio than a cramped wood deck.

Once built, a wooden deck is stationary and usually attached to the property. With pavers you have more flexibility to move your patio if you are changing the look of your garden. Also if you are renting your property your landlord may be loathe to allow the building of a wooden deck, whilst they may be happy with pavers that can easily be removed.
