Budgeting for your Wedding Marquee: Starts Here

The first thing to do is to establish where you would like the reception. Do you have use of a level garden or field large enough? If not, you are looking at hiring a venue, so cost going to jump up. Aside from the marquee itself, portaloos and generators are next biggest costs if you do not already have toilet facilities and a mains power supply on site and are likely to set you back £600 - £1200 depending on size and specification.

The cost of the actual marquee itself for a wedding reception depends partly on which types of marquee you utilise, but mostly on whether you are looking for something simple and basic, or whether you are going to want all the trimmings such as lighting effects, full linings, solid flooring, doors and windows, band platform and lighting, connecting awnings and walkways, classy banqueting chairs, colour coordinated table linen - the list goes on and on, and on!

A very simple wedding marquee I got involved with for a freind, was a simple traditional poled marquee with coconut matting on the floor and floodlights on dimmers. There were loos and a power supply on site. Some seating was provided, but much of the rest was hay bales and the food was an all-day buffet with an evening spit-roast. An acoustic band played in the evening with a home cd player playing a home made cd of favourite songs in between sets. Very informal and perfect for an unfussy farmers son. The pricing of the marquee , lighting, furniture and power was around £20 per head, and catered for approx 150 guests.

Now imagine the other end of the spectrum. An uneven sloping field with no facilities at all. We provided a raised, levelled sub-floor for the marquee with steps up to the high side. Portaloos were hired and tented in and power taken from a 40kva silent deisel generator, with a back-up just in case of failure.
We made a bespoke lining from cloth hand printed in India with a gold motif. Part of the marquee was sectioned off with a reveal curtain which had dappled light projected onto it, to gice the feel of sitting beneath a tree in Summertime.
Behind the screen was the band and dance floor - a starcloth lining with velvet walls to give a fantastic WOW! factor after the wedding breakfast and speeches. Specialist lighting gave a very subtle magenta colour wash to the main dining area, with white light pin-spots focussed on each table centre, and to flower arrangements and ice sculptures of cornucopia and clam shells loaded with fresh colourful foods for display. Illuminated semi-circular bar front added a nice feature, and naturally the chairs, table linen and table centres [callum lillies in crystal vases] followed a silver and pistachio colour scheme which blended nicely with the subtle pink. The bill for that little lot? Closer to £200 per head, 250 guests.

So as you can see, it really is entirely up to you and your budget. The average cost of a wedding marquee in Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, UK tends to be £40 - £70 per head which gets you a nice tidy set up with a nice touch or two.

Here you can find more detailed information on marquee hire  in general, and more specifically wedding marquees.

In all, try not to worry about all the extras; one or two little personal touches are enough to make a simple marquee your very own wedding venue without spending the family fortune.

Good Luck and Best Wishes for a great day!
