Effective Use of Country Prints

The term country prints applies, in fact, to two different things. The first meaning of print is a themed, repeating pattern, usually used on wallpaper and fabrics. The second meaning of print is a reproduction of a piece of artwork, as in an art print. Although these two definitions have significantly different purposes when used in decor, both can be remarkably effective if used well. In fact, both definitions of country prints are elements that are often brought to mind when one thinks of country decor. While patterned prints work in the background and art prints work more in the foreground, both can play vital roles in the look and feel of a room.

Country prints, in the sense of patterns, have a few very specific characteristics. Most often, the pattern is quaint, pretty, and not particularly obtrusive. The most common use of this type of prints in terms of decor is in wallpaper. Patterned wallpaper can create an excellent background scheme for a room, developing a mood to the space while not pushing that mood too heavily onto the people in the room.

Unfortunately, patters also have the ability to disrupt a space completely and cause it to become noisy, overly busy, and chaotic. When working with printed wallpaper, try to choose a print that will not draw too much attention. You want the print to be noticed initially, but then it should blend into the background. One of the most effective prints for this purpose is a flower pattern, which is one of the reasons that flowers are so popular for wallpaper.

Country prints are not restricted solely to wallpaper, though. They can also be found in a wide variety of fabrics. Of course, fabrics are not used in décor to the same degree as they are in clothing and such, but there are a few ways in which patterned fabrics can work well into country décor. The most use, though, is in drapery. In the case of drapes, you can afford to be a bit looser with these patterns, as the pattern will not persist through the entire room. Still take caution, though, least your pattern become obnoxious.

Country prints in the sense of art is an entirely different story. Most country art is simple and often depicting an outdoor setting, as so much of the country style revolves around nature. Some will depict a more personal scene, though, such as a scene from every day life that seems particularly interesting.

These types of prints can be excellent focus points for a room's decor, to pull other elements together and make a space seem unified. Keeping a common theme throughout your artwork, particularly if you can relate that theme to other elements of your décor is an excellent way to accomplish this. However, they should be used sparingly. Too many art prints, particularly close together, will draw a person’s attention in too many directions. Also, it is generally best to use the two types of country prints separately, as patterns used in the same space as art prints will very often just seem cluttered.
