Get Your Name in Space

(PRWEB) June 22, 2006 -- The space shuttle Endeavour carried many things into space, but one thing it did not do was take supporters names into space.

http://yournameinspace.org will get your name well on the way to space orbit, well actually at over 3 miles high your name will be a lot closer to space than many people have been in a small aircraft.

But what’s special about this promotion?

It’s a promotion for Adventure of Flight - http://adventureofflight.org - a record setting first ever round the world flight with an auto-engined airplane. There are no service areas flying across the Atlantic or Pacific so that auto-engine had better be totally reliable!

Spirit of Endeavour, and there’s a link with space flight, is pilot Steve Wood’s own homebuilt airplane. Coming from the Space Coast of central Florida, Spirit of Endeavour is also known as ‘GOOFY’ from its unique registration N-600FY, which looks just like ‘GOOFY’!

There’s more to the flight than simply getting names into near space orbit - Wood’s flight is promoting the US & UK charities Flying Scholarships for the Disabled, Formed in memory of the WWI Spitfire air ace Sir Douglas Bader by the Royal International Air Tattoo, Flying Scholarships for the Disables provides special challenges to the disabled pushing them to achieve new goals in their lives. Wood explains that “after all, flying ones own aircraft is something that many people aspire to yet few realise their ambition. To the disabled it’s even more challenging, and daunting, so the benefits from learning to fly are immense.”.

Wood’s record setting round the world flight will start in early August from New York and will encompass an attempt on a new FAI round the world record from New York to New York.

Aiming to involved supporters around the world, Wood, a member of Rotary eClub 7890, is keen to invite support to get at least 2000 supporters names on the airplane before the flight starts. Companies are also welcome to put their names and website address on the airplane to show their support.

But before the flight starts from Long Island, New York, Wood has a few more promotions up his sleeve. Flying in the AirVenture Cup air race and appearing at the world’s largest flying event - AirVenture at Oshkosh, WI are just two of the challenges before the flight even begins. Then there’s the invitation to display Spirit of Endeavour at the Vectren Dayton airshow - Dayton being the birthplace of aviation and there’s a link with Spirit of Endeavour as Steve’s airplane was authorized for flight on the very day of the 100th anniversary of the world’s first flight. Wood said “to have an airplane with such a historic connection to the world’s first flight, and then to be flying the first ever round the world flight in an auto-engined airplane is truly an honour”.

Wood also has another innovation up his sleeve - to get flight sim enthusiasts worldwide interested in the flight so they can fly real time virtual flights to accompany Spirit of Endeavour as it flies around the world.

Wood’s airplane is a homebuilt GlaStar has been fitted with a 220 hp supercharged Subaru auto-engine specially for the round the world flight - the first ever fitting of this engine in a GlaStar airplane. For the Four Corners Around America flight a traditional 125 hp aero engine was fitted.

Wood is following in the footsteps of his friend and mentor, Polly Vacher MBE, http://worldwings.org who flew around the world twice promoted Flying Scholarships for the Disabled. Polly has now stopped flying around the world so Wood is taking over the challenge, but this time in a homebuilt airplane built by the pilot.
