Ms. Grimm, the former owner of Angelina's Antique Tea House in Aurora, as well as two Curves franchises in West Linn, purchased the chapel in June. Her love of romance and weddings helped shape her decision to buy the chapel, which has had several major renovations and updates since she took over as the new owner. She is currently promoting the chapel at Portland area bridal fairs. Professionally, within the bridal industry, the chapel is known as the Canby Wedding Chapel.
She hopes for a sizeable turnout for the open house, particulary from members of the Canby community.
"I am amazed at how many people stop by on the street to chat with me, or talk to me in town and tell me that even after having lived in Canby for many years, they have never set foot in the chapel, let alone know it's here! I do hope to have a great turnout so that people can see the beauty and workmanship that's gone into this place--it really is an amazing little treasure for the city of Canby."
Grimm is focusing on the local and Portland area bridal industry for generating income with the chapel, having participated in her first bridal fair in September. She was in a larger one in November and was recently approved for a booth in the crown jewel of bridal fairs, the Portland Bridal Show in January at the Portland Convention Center.
"Most new vendors aren't even accepted for sometimes the first three or four years they apply to be in this bridal show. I feel very lucky to have gotten a booth at this show the very first year I applied. The owner of the show liked what the Chapel has to offer brides and felt it would be a great addition to his show."
The Chapel itself harkens back to the fine workmanship of decades long ago. The all white interior sports hand carved wooden benches, pressed tin walls "which provide the most amazing accoustics for music," and the entire chapel sports Povey stained glass windows with hand-painted lillies throughout the windows. A round stained glass window depicting Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane overlooks the alter. Brides can get dressed in a small bridal room just off the entrance of the church and grooms have a special place to get ready in a room behind the alter. The bell tower sports a working bell. A 9 foot flocked Christmas tree sits on the alter.
Local wedding vendors will be represented at the open house for couples looking for a wedding venue. The vendors are a "preferred list" of vendors that Grimm feels are particularly representative of the quality she hopes the chapel represents. Local wedding cakes and flowers, invitations and calligraphy and an officiant will be represented.
