The Swedish Modern Furniture Style

Swedish modern furniture is a concept that has been around since the 50's and 60's. The G Plan is the most popular style for this furniture type. Though difficult to find today, scouting online and at 2nd hand shops may produce the results you want.

 “  Plan G
We should probably refer to Swedish modern furniture as being from the 60s era when this particular furniture style was considered quite "in" for the time.

The "Plan G" model of this style entered the market during 1952 and gained popularity quickly, and accordingly, it was used enthusiastically by a large number of consumers.

What Is the Plan G Style?

You can best describe the Plan G as a concept of mixing and matching similar to that of the 60s when manufacturers produced a limited variety of furniture styles. This left consumers with no choice but to buy consecutive furniture pieces that would coordinate with the sets they originally purchased. In most cases this created a satisfactory result because furniture had the furniture was able to blend well in any space where it was required.

Homeowners who were used to buying high-end furniture sets at the same time welcomed this new concept. The Plan G meant they could buy pieces of furniture at different times without being concerned about whether they would match.

The most popular manufacturer of this furniture style is Scandinavia where the Plan G always has a modern flavor though not overly modern. The typical material consisted of a Swedish type of pine that was called summa, and the use of this material lead to pine being used as the material of choice for the retro style furniture. Tola, a darker African wood, was also used, especially for the manufacturing of more modern designs.

The Changing Trends

The last part of the 1960's brought a new trend, that of using disposable items. The furniture industry was not immune to this trend, as cardboard as well as blown-up chairs entered the market at a time when younger adults preferred the idea of buying new furniture every three or four years instead of keeping the same furniture for many years even after it became outdated. In spite of the trend, surveys conducted appeared to show that most people still preferred furniture of a solid wood and believed it was longer lasting and a better investment.

Today if you visit charity shops, garage sales, car boot sales, and weekend market it is quite easy to find retro style furniture. The Plan G furniture usually has gold and red stamps on its base. If you are attempting to purchase genuine Plan G furniture, it's important to authenticate the stamps as well. An online search may direct you to many stores selling the stamps, and though buying furniture online is not a preference for most people because of the high shipping costs, it may be the better option for finding the hard-to-find retro style furniture.
