When Love Is Just Not Enough

(PRWEB) September 7, 2006 -- Many parents, when considering adoption or foster care, are unaware of the risks associated with fostering and adopting children. Adoptions by celebrities and other high-profile public figures create an idealized view of the day-to-day reality of parenting adopted children. Risks and rewards go hand-in-hand, says Deborah Hannah, author of An Unlit Path: One Family’s Journey Toward the Light of Truth (paperback, 1-60034-484-4; hardcover, 1-60034-485-2). Sexual abuse, mental illness, and false allegations are just some of the pervasive issues discussed in the context of the Hannah family’s large brood—four biological, five adopted, and nine foster children. What happens when love is not enough?

Hannah’s story resonates with readers on a personal level as she touches on both heartbreak and joy while embracing the intrinsic challenges of parenting the “hard to place” child. She realizes that the risks inherent in taking on such a large responsibility are not discussed in the news and notes that this lack of information puts both prospective parents and children at a disadvantage. “I hope the reader is not discouraged but instead empowered by the realization that much of the tragedy we endured could have been avoided if we had been given proper training, education, and pertinent background information,” says Hannah.

Deborah Hannah and her husband, Joe, have spent more than a decade fostering and adopting children within the United States. She is a graduate of Saint Louis University with a degree in child psychology, a graduate of the Center for Biblical Counseling, and a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors.
