The look of American gardens in the 18th century showed strong influences from architectural pattern and garden design books. A number of these important volumes can be found in Colonial Williamsburg's rare books collection. The books provide wonderful illustrations of classical columns, obelisks, shells, putti, urns, stands, and basins, which inspired this line of distinctive garden accents.

Williamsburg Basket of Berries Birdbath - Verdi
Shaped like a shallow basket, this charming birdbath holds clusters of bas-relief blackberries. Ceramic wares based on naturalistic decoration, such as baskets of fruit, were popular in Williamsburg during the 1760s. Fragments of such wares have been excavated around the area, and exceptional intact examples can be found in Colonial Williamsburg's extensive ceramics collection. Made of sand-cast aluminum, our birdbath is inspired by those antiques.

Naturalist Mark Catesby, some of whose books reside in the Colonial Williamsburg collections, first discovered and illustrated the species in the 18th century.
