COPPER FURNITURE CARE

We consider our furniture to be heirloom quality, unique and in a class all by itself. As with any piece of fine furniture though, please use some care!

Do not set down hot plates without using a trivet or placemat and use coasters for all of your drinking glasses. We have our paint shop professionally apply three coats of a high quality lacquer to your tabletop to make it as durable as the finish on your car! We also hand wax all of our furniture with 3-coats of paste wax before they leave our shop. Please note: if you purchase a tabletop that is waxed only, you will eventually see water rings from glasses set on the tabletop.

Our finish process will cause anything spilled on the tabletop finish to "bead up" just as on the finish of a brand new car. Dust when needed with a clean, soft cloth. You may use a high quality furniture polish when dusting. We recommend every 6-12 months to apply a coat of paste wax to your tabletop and table base. Follow the instructions by letting the wax dry to a haze and buff to a clear finish with a clean soft cloth just as you would paste wax a car finish. Of course, as on a car finish, there are certain things that you would not want to spill on your tabletop, that would include solvents such as nail polish remover!

IMPORTANT, please remember too that copper will discolor if a ferrous metal such as steel is placed for a long period of time on the tabletop surface! This would include but not be limited to: steel or ferrous pottery, candlestick holders, charges etc.

That's all there is to the care of your copper table for years and years of enjoyment.

A Note about the use of Copper Fittings:

Please note that we never use plumbing fittings to join our pieces unless you specifically request them. We believe they look good in a plumbing system, but not on display in or around your home. Below, on the left, is an example of our construction methods building a Ryan Trellis (with optional green patina). On the right is a Ryan Trellis made with plumbing fittings. We believe our system of custom angle cuts or bends for the corners, and drilling and fitting of the cross-members is closer to the clean lines of fine furniture than the "below the kitchen sink" look of the technique at right. While both are sturdy and long lasting, we believe that G.I. Designs' construction methods has the definite edge in creating a work of art. You be the judge! (Of course, we also can create and compliment your custom project with complimentary materials such as wood, iron or stone).
